How to Detach Audio from a Video
Separating sound from its picture gives you independent audio timing and volume. NeoCut Pro offers two commands: keep the picture with Detach audio, or remove it with Keep audio only.

- Import a video that contains audio.Select the actual video clip on the timeline. A still image or a placeholder cannot supply a soundtrack.
- Find Detach audio.On desktop, use the Audio section of the bottom command bar. On a phone, swipe the selected clip's command buttons until Detach audio is visible. This is a Pro tool.
- Check the new Audio clip.NeoCut places the detached sound on an available audio row at the same timeline position and mutes the source video's sound. The picture stays on its original row.
- Edit the sound independently.Move or trim the detached audio, adjust Volume, or choose Mute to temporarily silence it. Listen around the separation point before continuing.
Which command should you choose?
Keep audio only
Remove the selected video picture and keep its sound on an audio row. Use this when the source recording is only needed for its audio.
Undo lets you reverse an editing action. Save a project backup before making a series of larger changes.
If the result is silent or doubled
- Check the source: the imported video must contain a decodable audio track. A format your browser cannot decode may need conversion first.
- Check the locks: unlock the video track before detaching. A locked sound visualizer linked to that clip must also be unlocked.
- Check the volumes: the source video is muted after detaching to avoid playing the same sound twice. Unmuting both copies can make the result louder.
- Check the playhead: it must be inside the detached clip's timeline range to hear it.
Detaching does not separate voice from background music. For that, Pro includes Isolate voice / background, a different processing tool with a 60-second source-audio limit per operation. Listen to the processed result before applying it.
Export the result you need
Export MP4 to keep a picture and your edited soundtrack together. Pro also offers audio-only MP3 export when you need a sound file. These exports render the edit; detaching alone creates an editable timeline clip, not a downloaded file.
